Psalm 105:1-11

New International Version

Psalm 105^(A)

¹Give praise to the Lord,^(B) proclaim his name;^(C)
    make known among the nations what he has done.
²Sing to him,^(D) sing praise to him;^(E)
    tell of all his wonderful acts.^(F)
³Glory in his holy name;^(G)
    let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
⁴Look to the Lord and his strength;
    seek his face^(H) always.

⁵Remember the wonders^(I) he has done,
    his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,^(J)
⁶you his servants, the descendants of Abraham,^(K)
    his chosen^(L) ones, the children of Jacob.
⁷He is the Lord our God;
    his judgments are in all the earth.

⁸He remembers his covenant^(M) forever,
    the promise he made, for a thousand generations,
⁹the covenant he made with Abraham,^(N)
    the oath he swore to Isaac.
¹⁰He confirmed it^(O) to Jacob as a decree,
    to Israel as an everlasting covenant:^(P)
¹¹“To you I will give the land of Canaan^(Q)
    as the portion you will inherit.”^(R)

Psalm 105:37-45

New International Version

³⁷He brought out Israel, laden with silver and gold,^(A)
and from among their tribes no one faltered.
³⁸Egypt was glad when they left,
because dread of Israel^(B) had fallen on them.

³⁹He spread out a cloud^(C) as a covering,
    and a fire to give light at night.^(D)
⁴⁰They asked,^(E) and he brought them quail;^(F)
    he fed them well with the bread of heaven.^(G)
⁴¹He opened the rock,^(H) and water gushed out;
    it flowed like a river in the desert.

⁴²For he remembered his holy promise^(I)
    given to his servant Abraham.
⁴³He brought out his people with rejoicing,^(J)
    his chosen ones with shouts of joy;
⁴⁴he gave them the lands of the nations,^(K)
    and they fell heir to what others had toiled^(L) for—
⁴⁵that they might keep his precepts
    and observe his laws.^(M)

Genesis 22:1-19

Abraham Tested

22 Some time later God tested^(A) Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”

“Here I am,”^(B) he replied.

²Then God said, “Take your son^(C), your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah.^(D) Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering^(E) on a mountain I will show you.^(F)”

³Early the next morning^(G) Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. ⁴On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. ⁵He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.^(H)”

⁶Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac,^(I) and he himself carried the fire and the knife.^(J) As the two of them went on together, ⁷Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”

“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.

“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb^(K) for the burnt offering?”

⁸Abraham answered, “God himself will provide^(L) the lamb^(M) for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

⁹When they reached the place God had told him about,^(N) Abraham built an altar^(O) there and arranged the wood^(P) on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar,^(Q) on top of the wood. ¹⁰Then he reached out his hand and took the knife^(R) to slay his son.^(S) ¹¹But the angel of the Lord^(T) called out to him from heaven,^(U) “Abraham! Abraham!”^(V)

“Here I am,”^(W) he replied.

¹²“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God,^(X) because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.^(Y)”

¹³Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram^[a] caught by its horns.^(Z) He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.^(AA) ¹⁴So Abraham called^(AB) that place The Lord^(AC) Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.^(AD)”

¹⁵The angel of the Lord^(AE) called to Abraham from heaven^(AF) a second time ¹⁶and said, “I swear by myself,^(AG) declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,^(AH) ¹⁷I will surely bless you^(AI) and make your descendants^(AJ) as numerous as the stars in the sky^(AK) and as the sand on the seashore.^(AL) Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,^(AM) ¹⁸and through your offspring^[b] all nations on earth will be blessed,^[c]^(AN) because you have obeyed me.”^(AO)

¹⁹Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba.^(AP) And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for^(A) and assurance about what we do not see.^(B) ²This is what the ancients were commended for.^(C)

³By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command,^(D) so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

Hebrews 11:13-19

New International Version

¹³All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised;^(A) they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance,^(B) admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.^(C) ¹⁴People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. ¹⁵If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.^(D) ¹⁶Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one.^(E) Therefore God is not ashamed^(F) to be called their God,^(G) for he has prepared a city^(H) for them.

¹⁷By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice.^(I) He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, ¹⁸even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”^[a]^(J) ¹⁹Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead,^(K) and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.
